Information

This rare bench or sofa was designed by Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen in 1957 and produced by Næstved Møbelfabrik in Denmark. Constructed from solid teak, the piece has been newly reupholstered in a finely textured grey wool fabric, maintaining the refined aesthetic of the original design while offering renewed functionality.

The design is characterized by a restrained, linear form that emphasizes proportion, detail, and material integrity. The seat and backrest are visually light yet generously sized, upholstered in grey wool that complements the warm tone of the teak frame. The elongated seat is subtly curved for ergonomic comfort, and the backrest is gently reclined with a precise bevel that reduces visual mass while providing support.

The teak frame features softly rounded edges and organic transitions between elements. Tapered front legs seamlessly rise to support the seat rail, while the rear legs extend upward to form the upright supports for the backrest. This integration of vertical and horizontal components demonstrates the designers’ focus on structure as both a technical and formal element.

Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen, trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under Kaare Klint, were pivotal figures in mid-century Danish design. Their collaborative work is celebrated for its clarity, restraint, and attention to human proportions. Næstved Møbelfabrik, the original manufacturer, was renowned for high-quality joinery and craftsmanship, often producing pieces for leading Danish architects.

The bench is in excellent restored condition. The upholstery is tight and smooth, and the teak frame is carefully preserved with only minor age-related wear. The original manufacturer’s mark is visible on the underside of the frame.
