Alvar Aalto stool

This stool, model X 602, was designed by Alvar Aalto and produced by Artek in Finland. It represents one of Aalto’s explorations into bentwood construction and functional seating, combining practicality with a distinctive sculptural character. Aalto’s designs often challenged traditional furniture-making techniques, and this model is a clear example of his continuous refinement of laminated birch and bentwood methods that became synonymous with Finnish modernism.

The seat is covered in original black leather, which shows wear and patina consistent with age, contributing to its authentic vintage quality. The round seat is visually softened by the leather’s natural surface, contrasting with the clean, architectural lines of the wooden base. The three legs are made of massive birch, bent to form Aalto’s characteristic curved profile. At their upper joints, the legs expand into fan-shaped sections where they meet the seat, creating both structural reinforcement and a striking visual rhythm.

This model is documented under Patent No. 154562, applied in April 1954, highlighting the innovative approach that Aalto and Artek brought to industrial production. The construction exemplifies the designer’s philosophy of uniting organic form with functional clarity. The interplay between natural birch and black leather also reflects Aalto’s sensitivity to materials, emphasizing tactile qualities while ensuring durability.

Produced by Artek, the company Aalto co-founded in 1935, the stool was part of a broader movement to bring modern Finnish design into both public and private spaces. The stool measures 37.5 cm in diameter (14.8 inches) and 45 cm in height (17.7 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and patina that underline its history and original character.
