Arne Hovmand-Olsen stools

This very rare set of bar stools was designed by Arne Hovmand-Olsen and produced in Denmark during the 1960s. The stools exemplify Scandinavian mid-century design through their sculptural woodwork and functional modernism, combining carefully chosen materials with clear structural precision.

Each stool features a solid rosewood base with four sharply tapered legs, connected by a circular chromed steel footrest that provides both support and a striking geometric contrast. The rosewood exhibits pronounced dark grain patterns against a deep reddish-brown tone, giving each piece a distinctive visual texture. The circular seats are thickly padded and newly reupholstered in a neutral-toned Kvadrat™ fabric, known for its tight weave and subtle texture, which complements the wood’s richness while ensuring durability.

The design is minimalist yet deliberate, emphasizing balance, refined joinery, and harmonious material contrasts. The slightly splayed legs enhance stability and impart a dynamic, light visual stance. Though functional as seating, the stools’ sculptural presence and quality materials elevate them beyond ordinary bar stools.

Arne Hovmand-Olsen (1919–1989) was a Danish furniture designer recognized for his elegant organic modernist style. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later educated at the Aarhus School of Architecture, his work is noted for slender proportions, graceful silhouettes, and expert wood craftsmanship. While he collaborated with several Danish manufacturers, many of his designs were also exported, notably to the American market.

The stools are in excellent condition. The rosewood retains a superb finish with minor age-related wear, the chrome footrests show minimal tarnish, and the upholstery is fresh and new.

Each stool measures 37 cm wide and deep, with a total height and seat height of 80 cm (approximately 14.6 by 14.6 inches, and 31.5 inches high).
