Information

This is a rare and early example of the model 3316, known as the Egg chair, designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark. Designed in 1958 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, the Egg is considered one of the most iconic pieces of mid-century Scandinavian furniture design. This particular chair is from the first production series.

The chair features a sculptural, organic shell made from a strong fiberglass frame, fully upholstered in its original cognac brown leather, which has developed a rich patina over time. The leather shows natural wear, creases, and surface marks consistent with age, adding depth and character to the piece. The chair is mounted on a four-star base in cast aluminium with a swivel function, emphasizing its combination of comfort and mobility.

Arne Jacobsen’s Egg chair was revolutionary in its form, designed to create a private, cocoon-like space in public interiors. It reflects Jacobsen’s mastery of both architectural space and furniture design, merging function and sculptural presence. Its enduring popularity has made it a benchmark of Danish modernism and a sought-after collector’s item.

The chair measures 87 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 106 cm in height, with a seat height of 36 cm, corresponding to approximately 34.3 x 31.5 x 41.7 inches and a seat height of 14.2 inches. This example, with its original leather upholstery and early production details, represents a highly desirable and authentic piece of mid-century design history.
