Information

This rare pair of Egg chairs, model 3316, designed by Arne Jacobsen and produced by Fritz Hansen in Denmark in 1958, epitomizes mid-century Scandinavian modernism with its iconic sculptural silhouette and innovative ergonomic design.

Each chair features a molded fiberglass shell shaped into an organic, enveloping form that offers privacy and comfort. The swiveling aluminum base with four legs adds a sleek, functional contrast to the curved shell. The original cognac brown leather upholstery has aged with a rich patina, showing significant wear, repairs, and signs of use that speak to their history and authenticity. This natural aging enhances the character of these timeless design classics.

Arne Jacobsen, a leading figure in Danish modern design and architecture, conceived the Egg chair as part of his holistic design for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. His work is celebrated for merging functionalism with fluid, nature-inspired shapes, making the Egg chair a pioneering piece in ergonomic and aesthetic terms. Fritz Hansen ensured the highest standards in craftsmanship, producing these chairs with meticulous attention to detail.

The pair measures 88 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 105 cm in height (34.6 x 33.5 x 41.3 inches), with a seat height of 36 cm (14.2 inches). Despite heavy signs of wear and restoration, these chairs remain powerful examples of Jacobsen’s visionary design and continue to embody the enduring legacy of Scandinavian modernism.
