Arne Jacobsen easy chairs
This very rare pair of easy chairs, model 4700, was designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen in 1965 and produced by Fritz Hansen, his longtime manufacturing partner. While Jacobsen is celebrated for his iconic shell chairs and architectural contributions, the 4700 model represents a distinctive yet less widely known exploration of low-slung, solid-wood lounge seating.
The chairs feature exposed oak frames that reveal the wood’s light golden hue and straight grain. The structure is composed of cylindrical legs and flat armrests, supported by a cross-stretcher system beneath the seat that adds both stability and a clear structural expression. The seat and backrest consist of thick, molded leather cushions upholstered in the original brown leather, which has developed a natural patina over time. These cushions are seamlessly integrated within the frame, with no visible fasteners, underscoring the refined craftsmanship and attention to detail. The leather exhibits natural aging and wear consistent with vintage upholstery, enhancing the chairs’ authenticity and character.
Stylistically, the model synthesizes Scandinavian functionalism with a clarity and precision characteristic of international modernism. The chairs possess generous proportions, featuring a broad stance and deep seating that encourages relaxed lounging.
The pair is in very good vintage condition, with an even patina across the leather surfaces and structurally sound oak frames. The dimensions of each chair are 106 centimeters (41.7 inches) in width and depth, with a seat height of 43.5 centimeters (17.1 inches), making them spacious and comfortable lounge chairs.
