Information

This two-seat sofa, model Ilona, was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden during the 1960s. The sofa’s structure is made from solid beechwood, stained in a deep, warm brown tone that complements the vivid upholstery. The design features cylindrical elements with exposed dowel joints and cross-supports, creating a strong architectural aesthetic rooted in functionalism.

The seating construction is defined by a sling-style support system, where thick saddle leather bands form the base and are tensioned around the frame using brass buckles. These details are visible from the rear, showcasing the piece’s material honesty and craftsmanship. The cushions are upholstered in an original fabric featuring a bold botanical pattern in shades of ochre, goldenrod, cream, and black. The floral design provides an expressive, organic contrast to the linearity of the wooden frame, evoking the graphic textile traditions of Swedish modernism.

Arne Norell, a key figure in postwar Swedish design, was known for his work with wood, leather, and fabric in modular and highly comfortable lounge furniture. His approach was influenced by both Scandinavian and international trends, notably the Brazilian design language of Sergio Rodrigues. Norell’s pieces often combined traditional joinery with a relaxed, contemporary form, resulting in furniture that was both robust and inviting.

The Ilona sofa exemplifies this approach, balancing precision joinery and soft upholstery with its modular, visually light construction. It is a notable example of Scandinavian mid-century experimentation with material expression and reflects the wider movement toward adaptable seating systems emphasizing comfort and individuality.

The sofa remains in good vintage condition, with visible patina to the wooden frame and leather, consistent with age and use. The upholstery retains strong visual impact in its original state.

The dimensions of the sofa are 155 cm in width, 80 cm in depth, and 73 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm (approximately 61 x 31.5 x 28.7 inches, seat height 15 inches).
