Information

This is the model “Kontiki” two-seater sofa designed by Swedish designer Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden during the 1960s. The piece is a clear expression of Scandinavian modernism with strong influences from international safari-style seating, executed with craftsmanship and material honesty.

The frame is constructed from solid stained beech wood, built in a modular system of cylindrical elements joined with precision dowels and bolts. The structure is kept intentionally visible and minimally treated to emphasize construction logic. The seating surfaces and cushions are suspended via a series of leather straps and brass buckles, which allow for flexible tension and visible joinery. The leather is a warm cognac-brown with natural variations in tone, exhibiting a soft sheen and creasing from age. This material choice contributes to the characteristically casual but refined look of the piece.

The backrest and seat cushions are generously filled and upholstered in matching leather, with saddle-stitched seams and substantial padding. The cushions are affixed to the frame with straps and buckles, a functional design feature that also underscores the piece’s equestrian and expeditionary aesthetic. The brass hardware, used both decoratively and structurally, provides a metallic accent and is present in the buckles, fasteners, and connectors. Over time, the brass has developed a subtle patina that complements the leather’s aged tone.

Arne Norell (1917–1971) was known for his exploration of new forms and international influence, often blending Scandinavian simplicity with global inspirations. He founded his company, Arne Norell AB, in the 1950s and became known for a number of iconic designs that incorporated leather, wood, and metal in soft yet structured ways. The Kontiki model is closely related to his more famous “Inca” and “Safari” chairs, sharing a focus on lightweight structure, ease of assembly, and tactile richness.

The condition is excellent vintage with only minor signs of use. The leather has aged uniformly and retains its structural integrity. The beech frame remains firm with minimal wear, and the brass fittings are intact with light, even oxidation.
