Information

This is a freestanding executive desk designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The desk is constructed primarily from richly grained rosewood, complemented by a tubular steel base structure. The surface exhibits the deep reddish-brown and dark veining typical of Brazilian rosewood, which was widely used in high-end Danish furniture before restrictions on its export. The top is rectangular with clean, softened edges, and is supported by a symmetrical configuration of chrome-plated steel legs that feature height-adjustable feet, detailed with a knurled grip for fine adjustment.

The desk features a functional and visually balanced layout with a modesty panel and integrated drawer unit on the right-hand side. The drawers are faced with matching rosewood veneer and fitted with sculptural square handles in brushed metal, integrating seamlessly with the desk’s modernist aesthetic. The handles are inset with circular cut-outs, contributing both to their tactile functionality and their geometric visual language. The opposing side panel provides symmetry to the composition, finished in the same rosewood veneer.

Condition-wise, the desk is in good restored vintage condition, with minor signs of use and patina primarily on the metal surfaces and leg fittings. The rosewood has been carefully refinished to preserve its expressive grain and lustre, maintaining the desk’s architectural presence while respecting its original materials.

Arne Vodder was a leading figure in Danish modern design, trained under Finn Juhl and known for his refined, humanist approach to functionalism. His works are characterized by subtle curves, asymmetrical compositions, and high craftsmanship. Sibast Møbelfabrik, the producer of this piece, collaborated with several key Danish designers and was particularly known for their advanced woodworking techniques and high-quality rosewood and teak production during the mid-century period.

The style of the desk aligns with the Scandinavian modern movement, emphasizing utility, clarity of form, and high-quality natural materials. Its minimalist steel framework combined with rich rosewood surfaces reflects an industrial-modern aesthetic characteristic of executive furniture from the late 1950s to the 1960s.

Dimensions are 204 cm in width, 90 cm in depth, and 69.5 cm in height. In imperial units, this equates to approximately 80.3 inches wide, 35.4 inches deep, and 27.4 inches high. The height is adjustable through the threaded base fittings on each leg.
