Information

The rare model 209 L-shaped desk with integrated sideboard, designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark, is a superb example of functional elegance within mid-century Danish modernism. Created during the height of Vodder’s design career, this piece reflects his masterful command of proportion, material richness, and architectural composition, marking it as one of the most celebrated executive desk designs of the 20th century.

Constructed from luxurious rosewood, the desk showcases dramatic, expressive grain patterns and deep reddish-brown hues—qualities that define the best of Danish cabinetmaking. The wood’s surface has been meticulously maintained, now bearing a satin-like patina that speaks to the desk’s age and provenance while preserving its original character. The L-shaped configuration provides an expansive and efficient workspace, with one wing serving as a writing surface and the other as a full-function storage unit.

The attached sideboard is an integral part of the design, visually and functionally balancing the composition. It features a thoughtful combination of drawers and a cabinet, offering concealed storage without compromising the desk’s light, sculptural form. One of the most distinctive elements is the set of sliding trays finished in a vivid blue lacquer—a whimsical yet restrained detail characteristic of Vodder’s work. This subtle injection of color into an otherwise neutral palette exemplifies the designer’s ability to balance playfulness with dignity.

The structural design is elegant and refined. The legs are slightly tapered, elevating the desk visually and reducing its perceived mass. The desk’s footprint is generous but carefully resolved, making it suitable not only for executive office use but also as a showpiece in residential settings where sculptural furniture is appreciated.

Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a central figure in Danish modern design, particularly known for his attention to organic forms, the expressive use of natural materials, and his collaborations with top-tier cabinetmakers such as Sibast Møbelfabrik. Sibast, in turn, was instrumental in translating Vodder’s nuanced design language into high-quality furniture that combined industrial precision with handcrafted integrity. Their partnership yielded a number of highly collectible pieces, and model 209 stands at the apex of their joint oeuvre.

This desk is in excellent vintage condition. The rosewood surfaces are clean, polished, and retain their depth and vibrancy. The blue-painted trays have been preserved with minimal wear, and the structural components—including the drawer mechanisms and cabinet doors—function smoothly. Any signs of age, such as faint marks or patina, contribute positively to the authenticity and tactile richness of the piece.
