Arne Vodder dining chairs
This rare set of dining chairs, model 51, was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1951.
The set includes four armless chairs and two armchairs, all constructed from a refined combination of solid oak and teak with hand-woven cane seats and backs. The model exemplifies the Danish modern ethos of the early 1950s, blending organic materiality with an understated structural elegance and ergonomic clarity. Each chair features a frame constructed primarily from oak, joined with precision and characterized by softly curved lines and subtly flared legs. The teak backrest elements contrast visually with the lighter oak frames, highlighting a two-tone composition that was characteristic of Vodder’s early designs. The seat and back panels are finely woven in natural cane, providing a lightweight and breathable surface that contributes to the chairs’ tactile appeal and visual openness. The woven elements are recessed into the frame with clean transitions and secure attachment, exhibiting skilled craftsmanship. The armchair variant adds a pair of gently curving armrests that taper elegantly forward and integrate seamlessly into the upright structure, offering comfortable support without interrupting the visual flow of the design. The proportions are compact yet supportive, making them well-suited for dining environments while retaining sculptural clarity from all angles.
Arne Vodder, a Danish architect and furniture designer closely associated with Finn Juhl, was known for his graceful lines, use of natural materials, and focus on form and function. His collaborations with Sibast Møbelfabrik resulted in some of his most enduring work, with the model 51 becoming an iconic example of Danish dining chair design. Sibast’s high standards of joinery and finishing further elevate the historical and collectible value of this set. The set is in very good vintage condition with a consistent patina to the wood and minor wear to the cane consistent with age and use. Structural integrity remains excellent throughout.
