Arnold Madsen easy chair
The Clam easy chair, designed by Arnold Madsen and produced by Madsen & Schubell in Denmark in 1944, is a notable example of mid-century Scandinavian design. The chair’s frame is made from solid birch, showcasing rounded legs and elegantly curved armrests that flow seamlessly into the organic form of the piece. The new sheepskin upholstery in deep red provides a tactile and vibrant contrast against the warm, patinated wood.
Arnold Madsen, recognized for his sculptural and innovative approach to furniture, collaborated with Henry Schubell under Madsen & Schubell to create designs that balanced aesthetics with ergonomic comfort. The Clam chair is especially distinguished by its deep, reclined seat and enveloping shape, delivering both softness in appearance and physical support.
Rooted in Scandinavian tradition, the chair emphasizes natural materials, skilled craftsmanship, and organic lines. This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with a richly patinated birch frame and fresh sheepskin upholstery. The dimensions are 70 cm in width, 87 cm in depth, and 75 cm in height, with a seat height of 38 cm (27.6 x 34.3 x 29.5 inches, seat height 15 inches).
