Arnold Madsen
Arnold Madsen (1907–1989) was a Danish furniture designer and manufacturer associated with the development of Danish modern furniture during the mid-20th century. He is best known for his work in upholstered seating, often characterized by organic forms, sculptural silhouettes, and a high level of craftsmanship. Madsen frequently worked in close collaboration with cabinetmaker Henry Schubell, producing furniture that combined innovative design with traditional upholstery techniques.
Biography
Arnold Madsen trained as an upholsterer and later established himself as both a designer and manufacturer in Denmark. During the postwar decades, he became active in the expanding Danish furniture industry, focusing primarily on lounge chairs and sofas designed for comfort and visual impact. His practical background in upholstery influenced his approach to form, allowing him to develop seating with complex curves and carefully tailored finishes.
Through the partnership of Madsen & Schubell, established in the 1940s, Arnold Madsen produced a range of seating furniture that gained recognition both in Denmark and internationally. Their workshop specialized in handcrafted upholstered pieces, often executed in materials such as wool, leather, and teak, and distinguished by bold proportions and distinctive detailing. Many of these designs were exported, particularly to the United States and European markets during the 1950s and 1960s.
Arnold Madsen’s work represents a sculptural and craft-oriented strand of Danish modern design. His furniture remains valued for its expressive forms, technical skill, and the combination of comfort and visual character that defined much of Danish upholstered furniture in the mid-century period.
