Arthur Pettersson candlesticks
This set of three brass candlesticks, designed and produced by Arthur Pettersson in his Kolbäck, Sweden workshop during the 1950s, exemplifies the restrained geometric sensibility characteristic of Scandinavian postwar metalwork. Executed entirely in solid brass, the set consists of two single-light holders and one larger double-light variant, each constructed with a focus on formal clarity, balance, and the interplay between negative and positive space.
The smaller candlesticks are built around crescent-shaped vertical brass elements, their curved profiles resting on circular flat bases. The candleholders are placed centrally at the top of the arc, reinforcing the symmetrical balance of the composition. These pieces employ minimal material intervention, relying on proportion and silhouette to create visual impact. The third, larger candlestick expands this vocabulary by incorporating a full circular ring as its central feature, also mounted vertically on a circular base. Two short arms extend horizontally from either side of the ring to support the candle sockets, introducing a subtle linear counterpoint to the circular form.
The design across all three pieces highlights an architectural sensibility—one that emphasizes mass, void, and axial alignment. The repetition of circular geometry and central symmetry reflects a distinctly modernist approach, while the hand-wrought execution introduces small irregularities and tooling traces that lend the objects warmth and individuality.
The brass surfaces are matte and unpolished, bearing a natural patina with areas of oxidation and tonal variation. These marks of aging reinforce the material integrity of the pieces and affirm their mid-century origin. The undersides of the bases are inscribed “Arthur Pe Kolbäck,” confirming both authorship and place of production.
Arthur Pettersson remains a lesser-documented figure in Swedish design, yet his metalwork demonstrates a high level of formal discipline and technical precision. Operating a small workshop in Kolbäck, he produced limited series and unique pieces, often characterized by modest scale, bold silhouettes, and a tactile material presence. His work stands as an understated but valuable contribution to the broader narrative of Scandinavian functionalist design.
The set is in good vintage condition. All three candlesticks are structurally sound, with visible surface patina and oxidation consistent with age and handmade production. No repairs or modifications are evident.
The double candlestick measures 14 cm in width, 6 cm in depth, and 8.5 cm in height (approximately 5.5 × 2.4 × 3.3 inches). Each of the two smaller candlesticks measures 6 cm in width, 5.5 cm in depth, and 7 cm in height (approximately 2.4 × 2.2 × 2.8 inches).
