Arthur Pettersson candlesticks
This set of ten brass candlesticks was designed and produced by Arthur Pettersson in his own studio in Kolbäck, Sweden, during the 1950s. Each piece is formed from solid brass and shaped into a circular profile with a flattened base, creating a balanced geometric form. The central spike for holding the candle is integrated into the inner cavity of the ring, emphasizing an interplay between void and volume. The brass surfaces display warm golden tones with areas of natural oxidation and patina, characteristic of aged, untreated brass.
Pettersson’s signature is engraved on the underside of the pieces, indicating their artisanal production. Working from Kolbäck, he developed a workshop practice focused on precision metalwork and small-scale sculptural objects. These candlesticks reflect his interest in pure form and functional simplicity, reducing the object to a minimal composition of circle, plane, and vertical support. The consistent geometry across the set demonstrates careful craftsmanship, while slight variations from hand-finishing contribute to their individuality.
The style aligns with Scandinavian mid-century modernism, where designers explored reductive forms and honest materials. Brass, with its ability to develop a rich patina, was frequently used in Swedish decorative arts of this period. The subtle asymmetry of the outer ring and the precisely machined inner section give the pieces a sculptural presence even when not in use.
The set is in good vintage condition with minor signs of usage, including small surface marks and light oxidation. These characteristics are consistent with the material and age, and they contribute to the authentic appearance of the pieces.
