Axel Einar Hjorth coffee table
This very rare coffee table, model Birka, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s. It represents an early example of Scandinavian modernism, skillfully blending functionalist ideals with a refined aesthetic and the use of high-quality materials.
The table is crafted from elm, featuring a circular top with a radial veneer pattern that beautifully highlights the natural grain of the wood. The meticulously arranged surface creates a geometric effect, reflecting Hjorth’s keen attention to detail and material expression. The base comprises three substantial legs—two rectangular and one cylindrical—imparting a sculptural presence while providing excellent structural stability.

As head designer at Nordiska Kompaniet, he bridged traditional Swedish craftsmanship with emerging modernist tendencies, creating timeless pieces celebrated for their elegant simplicity and bold form.
The table is in good vintage condition, exhibiting minor wear consistent with its age. It measures 105 cm in diameter and 46 cm in height (approximately 41.3 by 18.1 inches).
