Information

The Lovö cabinet, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1930s, is a rare and distinguished example of early Scandinavian modernism influenced by the functionalist movement. Crafted from acid-stained pine, the cabinet presents a sturdy yet refined construction marked by vertical wooden slats on its exterior. This detailing imparts a strong architectural presence, balancing solidity with visual rhythm. Complementing the wood are black iron fittings, including hinges, drawer handles, and decorative rivets, which contribute to the rustic character while reflecting a harmonious interplay between craftsmanship and industrial design elements.

Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959) was a prominent Swedish designer celebrated for integrating traditional materials with modernist design principles. His furniture, particularly the Lovö series, was designed for country homes and summer retreats, where raw, acid-stained wood was combined with minimalist, functional forms. Produced by Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s most prestigious manufacturers, the Lovö series has become highly regarded and collectible within Swedish design history.

Functionally, the cabinet includes two large doors that open to reveal multiple interior shelves, along with two small drawers for supplementary storage. The lower section features a full-width drawer with iron ring handles, adding practical utility while maintaining a cohesive design language. The piece is preserved in well-maintained condition, exhibiting a patina consistent with its age and use.

The cabinet measures 100 cm in width, 45.5 cm in depth, and 155 cm in height (39.4 by 17.9 by 61 inches), making it a striking yet functional storage solution emblematic of 1930s Scandinavian modernism.
