Axel Einar Hjorth cabinet
This cabinet is a rare example of the “Lovö” model, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1930s. Constructed from black-stained pine, the cabinet features a solid and robust structure complemented by black iron fittings. Its front is composed of vertical wooden planks, secured with visible round metal fastenings that contribute to a rustic yet modern aesthetic. The doors open to reveal multiple shelves and two centrally placed drawers, providing versatile and functional storage.
Axel Einar Hjorth was a prominent Swedish designer recognized for his ability to merge modernist ideals with traditional craftsmanship. Serving as chief designer at Nordiska Kompaniet from the late 1920s through the 1930s, Hjorth played a significant role in shaping Swedish furniture design during this period. His “Sportstugemöbler” (sport cabin furniture) series, which includes the “Lovö” model, emphasized sturdy construction and a rustic character, often intended for summer homes and leisure environments.
Nordiska Kompaniet, established in 1902, was one of Sweden’s foremost producers of high-quality furniture. Under Hjorth’s guidance, the company introduced several influential designs that balanced functionality with refined craftsmanship, catering to both individual commissions and a wider market.
The “Lovö” series debuted at NK’s spring exhibition in Stockholm in 1932, embodying Hjorth’s vision of furniture that combined modernist principles with a raw, natural aesthetic. This particular cabinet was likely a special order from that era, making it a notably unique piece.
The cabinet is well-preserved, showing wear consistent with its age. The black stain has developed a patina, especially along the edges, which adds to its character and authenticity.
The dimensions are 100 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 155 cm in height (39.4 x 17.7 x 61 inches), reflecting its substantial yet elegantly simple presence.
