Axel Einar Hjorth dining table
This rare dining table, model Birka, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1930s, is a distinguished example of early Scandinavian modernism. Crafted from elm with flamed birch accents, the table features a warm, natural coloration complemented by a striking wood grain pattern. The solid rectangular top rests on four cylindrical, slightly tapered legs made from flamed birch, which highlight the natural figure of the wood.
Functionality is emphasized by three additional extension leaves, each measuring 60 cm, which allow the table to expand from its original length of 175 cm up to 355 cm. The extension mechanism is discreetly integrated, preserving the seamless visual flow of the wood grain across the tabletop. The overall design showcases clean, geometric lines and practical construction, aligning with the Scandinavian functionalist ethos that combines aesthetic simplicity with usability.
Axel Einar Hjorth (1888–1959), as head designer for Nordiska Kompaniet, was influential in defining the Scandinavian functionalist style, merging luxurious materials with minimalist forms and craftsmanship that balances tradition with modernity.
Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden’s premier furniture manufacturer at the time, was known for producing high-quality, custom furniture pieces. Hjorth’s contributions to NK are regarded as some of the finest examples of early 20th-century Scandinavian design, with his pieces now highly collectible.
The table exemplifies a refined yet practical early modernist aesthetic. It measures 175 cm in width (extendable up to 355 cm), 95 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height (68.9 to 139.8 x 37.4 x 29.1 inches). The piece is in good vintage condition, showing wear and patina appropriate for its age.
