Barbro Nilsson carpet

This very rare flat-woven wool carpet, titled ‘Strålblomman röd’, was designed by Barbro Nilsson and produced by Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB in Sweden. The design dates back to 1952 and represents a synthesis of traditional Swedish weaving techniques with a modernist approach to color and form. The pattern features a central radiating star motif repeated symmetrically across the field, rendered in a rich palette dominated by reds, deep orange, burgundy, and ochre. Neutral beige tones are applied in the border and fringe, providing a subtle contrast to the vibrant core. The color transitions are executed with precision using the classic kilim technique, which enables crisp geometric shifts without the use of pile.

The carpet is signed with woven initials, “BN” for Barbro Nilsson and “AB MMF” for Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, signifying both the designer and the workshop responsible for its production. Nilsson took over as artistic director of the studio in 1942 and is regarded as one of the foremost Swedish textile artists of the 20th century. Her work is characterized by a deep understanding of traditional weaving methods combined with an abstracted use of natural and symbolic motifs, contributing significantly to the development of Scandinavian textile design.

Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, established in 1919 in Båstad, Sweden, is internationally renowned for its artisanal craftsmanship and collaborative production model, pairing artist-designers with skilled master weavers. The carpet exemplifies the technical skill and clarity of design that have become hallmarks of the studio’s output, reflecting a high degree of artisanal quality and precision.

The carpet is preserved in very good vintage condition, maintaining its original structure and fringe intact, with no significant signs of wear, damage, or discoloration. The dimensions measure 320 centimeters in width and 202 centimeters in depth (126 inches W x 79.5 inches D).
