Barbro Nilsson carpet

This very rare carpet, titled ‘Strålblomman grå’ was designed by Barbro Nilsson and produced by Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB in Sweden. Created in 1952, the carpet is a notable example of mid-century Scandinavian modern textile design, reflecting a sophisticated interplay of geometric abstraction and traditional craftsmanship.

The design features a repeating abstract motif reminiscent of stylized radiating floral forms. The color palette is earthy and muted, comprising shades of brown, beige, gray, black, and soft green. This composition is bordered by a zigzag patterned frame, a design element frequently found in Scandinavian weaving, which adds structure and rhythm to the overall pattern. The carpet bears the signature initials “BN” for Barbro Nilsson alongside “MMF” for Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, confirming its authenticity and distinguished provenance.

Barbro Nilsson was a leading Swedish textile artist and the artistic director of Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB from the 1940s onward. Her work is known for merging traditional Swedish weaving techniques with modernist design principles, producing textiles that combine artistic expression with practical function. Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB, founded in 1919, is regarded as one of Sweden’s foremost weaving ateliers, noted for its exceptional quality and contribution to 20th-century Scandinavian textile arts.

The carpet is preserved in well-maintained vintage condition, exhibiting even wear appropriate to its age. The wool fibers retain their original softness and depth, while the fringes along the edges remain intact, further preserving the piece’s integrity.

Measuring 290 cm in width and 218 cm in depth (114.2 by 85.8 inches), the carpet represents both a functional textile and a work of art emblematic of mid-century Scandinavian design heritage.
