Barbro Nilsson
Barbro Nilsson (1899–1983) was a leading Swedish textile artist, widely regarded for her mastery of gobeläng flat weave and her influential role in shaping 20th-century Scandinavian textile art. Renowned for her exceptional sense of colour and technical precision, she produced both monumental tapestries and durable woven rugs that bridged artistic expression and functional design.
Biography
Barbro Nilsson was born in Malmö and received her early training in weaving at a young age, later continuing her studies at the School of Industrial Arts in Stockholm (Konstfack), where she would also go on to teach and eventually lead the textile department. Her early career combined education with independent studio work, and she quickly established herself as a highly skilled colourist and weaver.
In the late 1920s, Nilsson began translating artists’ designs into large-scale woven works, including early commissions such as tapestries for M/S Kungsholm. Her collaboration with painter Sven Erixon led to a series of major gobeläng flat weaves, most notably Melodier vid torget for the Gothenburg Concert Hall, one of the largest of its kind.
A defining chapter of her career began in 1942, when she became artistic director of Märta Måås-Fjetterström AB in Båstad. There, she was responsible not only for preserving and developing existing designs, but also for creating new compositions and expanding the studio’s capabilities. Under her leadership, the workshop grew significantly, attracting a new generation of textile artists and increasing both production and artistic scope.
Nilsson played a central role in adapting gobeläng flat weave techniques for use in robust floor rugs, with works such as Snäckorna (1943) marking an important shift in Swedish textile design. Her compositions often drew inspiration from nature—particularly coastal landscapes—translated into nuanced colour harmonies and rhythmic patterns.
Alongside her work at MMF AB, Nilsson remained active as an educator and mentor, shaping future generations of textile artists. Her legacy is defined by a rare combination of artistic sensitivity, technical mastery, and institutional influence, securing her position as one of the most important figures in Scandinavian textile history.
