Information

This pair of sculptures, model Girocubes, was designed by the artist duo Beck & Jung (Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg) and produced in Sweden in 1977. The work reflects the designers’ fascination with geometric abstraction and optical play, characteristic of their broader artistic output that bridged art, design, and emerging computer-based visual techniques during the 1970s.

Each sculpture consists of two interlocking metal pyramidal forms in polished aluminum, set on a rectangular black acrylic base. The composition explores the relationship between light, reflection, and volume through precise geometric repetition. The mirrored metallic surfaces interact dynamically with their surroundings, creating alternating areas of brightness and shadow depending on the viewing angle. The minimalist symmetry and industrial materials express the Scandinavian modernist approach to sculptural form, where clarity of line and reduction of ornament achieve visual strength.

This example is numbered and inscribed “292/700, Beck o. Jung, 1977” on the base, indicating its edition within a limited series. The pair is in good vintage condition with minor signs of wear and light surface patina consistent with age.

Dimensions: 8 cm wide, 8 cm deep, and 4.5 cm high (3.1 x 3.1 x 1.8 in).
