Holger Bäckström

Holger Bäckström (1939–1997) was a Swedish designer and artist associated with modern furniture production in Sweden during the second half of the 20th century. He is best known for his work in modular furniture and for his collaboration with the manufacturer Elitmöbler in Tibro. Bäckström’s designs are characterized by structural clarity, flexibility, and a systematic approach to form, reflecting the broader development of rational and industrially oriented design in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s.

Biography

Holger Bäckström was active as a designer and artist during a period marked by increasing interest in modular systems and adaptable interior solutions. In the early 1960s he began collaborating with designer and artist Bo Ljungberg (1939–2007). Working together under the name Beck & Jung, they developed furniture and objects that combined functional design with conceptual thinking derived from contemporary art practices.

In addition to furniture design, Bäckström and Ljungberg worked across several artistic media, including painting, sculpture, and early computer-generated art. Their work explored repetition, geometry, and modular construction, principles that were directly translated into their furniture systems. Through their collaboration with Elitmöbler, they produced shelving and storage systems designed for flexibility and serial production, using materials such as lacquered wood, metal, and laminated panels.

Holger Bäckström’s work represents an important connection between experimental art and industrial design in postwar Sweden. His furniture remains associated with the modular design principles that shaped interiors during the late 20th century, valued for its functional adaptability, clear structural logic, and integration of artistic ideas into everyday objects.
