Information

This rare mid-century Scandinavian bench, produced in Sweden during the 1950s, is designed in the manner of Carl Malmsten. Constructed from solid pine, the piece is characterized by a rectilinear, low-profile form with restrained proportions and subtle handcrafted detailing, typical of Swedish modernist craftsmanship from that era. The design emphasizes simplicity and functional elegance, reflecting the Swedish approach to minimalism and natural materials.

The bench features a rectangular seat with rounded corners and softened edges, supported by two wide, flat, vertically mounted leg supports. The legs are reinforced with horizontal stretchers that include curved braces, adding structural stability and a touch of ornamental detail. The pine wood has a warm amber hue, with visible grain patterns, knots, and occasional tool marks that give the piece a sense of honest materiality. The joinery is carefully executed, with wooden dowels and exposed plugs, which highlights the artisanal craftsmanship reminiscent of Carl Malmsten’s design principles.

The seat has been newly upholstered in a plain-woven linen fabric in a warm off-white tone, offering a tactile contrast to the rich tones of the pine. The upholstery is minimal, flat-padded, and unembellished, maintaining the bench’s utilitarian character while providing comfort. The simplicity of the seat reflects the focus on functionality and understated beauty that was central to Swedish design at the time.

Carl Malmsten (1888–1972) was a prominent figure in Swedish design, known for his resistance to industrialization and his preference for handcrafted furniture inspired by traditional Swedish forms and materials. While this bench is not a documented Malmsten design, it is clearly influenced by his aesthetic, with its emphasis on natural wood, exposed joinery, and human-scale proportions, all of which were key elements in his body of work.

The bench is in very good condition, with light wear appropriate to its age, including small signs of use on the wood structure. The fabric has been recently reupholstered and remains clean and unworn, preserving the integrity of the piece while enhancing its longevity.

The dimensions of the bench are 160 cm in width, 40 cm in depth, and 42 cm in height, with a seat height of 42 cm. In imperial units, these measurements correspond to approximately 63 inches wide, 15.7 inches deep, and 16.5 inches high.
