Bench / side table
This rare mid-century Scandinavian bench or side table with an integrated flower box was produced in Sweden during the 1960s by an unknown designer. The piece is constructed from solid pine and copper, embodying a utilitarian design balanced by refined craftsmanship and contrasting materials.
The frame is made from light-toned pine, joined using visible dowels and traditional wedged through-tenon joints, highlighting the structural clarity and artisanal quality of the construction. The surface consists of evenly spaced pine slats running lengthwise, creating a rhythmic and breathable design. One end of the bench features a built-in flower box crafted from aged copper with a warm, oxidized patina. The copper provides a tactile and tonal contrast to the dry golden hues of the pine, contributing a functional sculptural element to the piece.
The bench is low and rectilinear with clean horizontal lines, embodying Scandinavian modern principles that prioritize simplicity, natural materials, and practicality. It likely served a dual purpose in domestic interiors as both seating and a display for plants or decorative items.
The condition is good, with minor wear consistent with age, including light surface marks and patina, especially on the copper insert and the edges of the pine slats. The structure remains stable and retains its original integrity.
Dimensions are 130 centimeters wide, 52 centimeters deep, and 35 centimeters high (approximately 51.2 by 20.5 by 13.8 inches).
