Bergboms table lamps
This is a rare and well-preserved pair of table lamps, model B-55, designed and produced by Bergboms in Sweden during the 1960s. The lamps feature a geometric and rectilinear base construction made of brass framework with inset mirrored glass panels, exemplifying a refined and architectural modernist approach that was typical of Swedish lighting design in this era.
The structural base is composed of a vertical rectangular prism form, clad on all visible sides in mirror glass bordered by slender brass profiles. The upper brass plate is smooth, anchoring a cylindrical brass stem that rises vertically to support the lampshade. The lamps are fitted with newly made trapezoidal shades in a white-colored textile, complementing the reflective and warm metallic elements of the base.
The condition of both lamps is excellent, with the brass retaining a uniform patina that evidences age without significant oxidation or damage. The mirror panels are free from cracks or notable blemishes and are firmly set within the frame.
Bergboms was an important Swedish lighting manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, known for its collaborations with leading Scandinavian designers such as Alf Svensson and Greta Magnusson-Grossman. The company’s work is characterized by a restrained elegance, merging traditional materials like brass with progressive formal language that aligned with the international modernist movement. The B-55 model embodies these qualities, balancing symmetry, reflectivity, and subtle decorative detail.
These lamps are stylistically situated at the intersection of Scandinavian modernism and mid-century international design, with elements that also reference early Hollywood Regency through the use of mirrored surfaces and brass.
Each lamp measures 35.5 cm in depth, 20.5 cm in width, and 59.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 14 inches deep, 8.1 inches wide, and 23.4 inches tall.
