Information

This stoneware bowl, crafted by Berndt Friberg in 1965, is an exemplary representation of Swedish mid-century ceramic artistry. Executed in high-fired stoneware with a subtly flaring conical form, the piece rests on a narrow, slightly raised foot, which adds both visual and structural lift to the composition. The vessel’s asymmetrical, slightly oval rim contributes a dynamic tension to the otherwise balanced form.

The glaze is a hallmark of Friberg’s mastery, featuring a refined gradation of smoky brown merging into steel blue tones, with delicate speckling across the surface. The depth and complexity of the hare’s fur glaze technique are evident, creating a sense of movement and variation that changes with the light and viewing angle. The interior displays a rich, velvety character, enhancing the tactile and visual qualities of the piece.

This work was produced at the Gustavsberg Porcelain Factory, one of Sweden’s most important ceramic manufacturers during the 20th century. Friberg, who began working at Gustavsberg in 1934 under the tutelage of Wilhelm Kåge, was known for his exceptional throwing technique and for developing refined glaze compositions in subtle, tonal palettes. He maintained complete control over his production process, from form to final glaze, which results in highly cohesive and personal works.

The bowl is signed on the underside with Friberg’s incised signature and the Gustavsberg studio mark, ensuring authenticity. It remains in excellent condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs, and retains its original surface integrity.

This bowl measures 18 cm in width, 15.5 cm in depth, and 8 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 7.1 inches by 6.1 inches by 3.1 inches. The object embodies the restrained elegance and technical finesse characteristic of Scandinavian modern ceramics at their highest level.
