Berndt Friberg bowl
This is a stoneware bowl designed by Berndt Friberg for Gustavsberg, Sweden, dated 1964.
The bowl has an elegant, asymmetrical conical form raised on a small circular foot. It is decorated in a refined glaze that transitions from a deep brown core to a subtle blue hue along the edges, producing a soft iridescent effect characteristic of Friberg’s masterful glaze techniques. The surface reveals his signature fine hare’s fur texture, a result of his meticulous and controlled firing process.
Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) is considered one of the great masters of Scandinavian studio ceramics. Known for his precision in throwing and his sophisticated, often miniature forms, Friberg worked at Gustavsberg from 1934 until his death. His pieces, typically produced in small series or as unique works, are recognized for their restrained elegance and highly refined glazes, often inspired by Asian ceramics yet uniquely Scandinavian in character.
This example is in excellent condition and signed on the base with “Friberg” and Gustavsberg’s studio marks. It exemplifies Friberg’s ability to combine a minimalist form with complex glaze depth, making it a highly desirable piece for collectors of mid-20th century Swedish ceramics.
