Information

Rare and exceptionally tall ceramic vase designed by Berndt Friberg and produced by Gustavsberg, Sweden. Friberg is widely regarded as one of the foremost Scandinavian ceramic artists of the twentieth century, celebrated for his impeccable craftsmanship, refined proportions, and extraordinary mastery of glaze. His works are represented in major museum collections and remain among the most sought-after examples of Swedish studio ceramics.

This elegant vase features Friberg’s iconic elongated bottle form, rising gracefully from a narrow foot to a slender neck and softly flared rim. The silhouette demonstrates the precision and balance for which the artist became renowned, with every curve carefully considered to create a harmonious and sculptural presence. At 54 cm in height, this example is particularly impressive and uncommon, standing among the larger and more dramatic forms produced within Friberg’s oeuvre.

The vase is finished in a beautiful hare’s fur glaze, displaying subtle vertical streaking and tonal transitions that animate the surface. Rich brown and smoky grey hues gradually dissolve into a vibrant cobalt blue concentrated around the neck and interior rim, creating a striking contrast while maintaining the understated elegance characteristic of Friberg’s work. The glaze reveals remarkable depth and complexity, with delicate variations that shift depending on the light and viewing angle.

Executed entirely by hand, the vase reflects the exceptional standards maintained at Gustavsberg’s studio workshop during Friberg’s tenure. Each piece was individually thrown, trimmed, glazed, and signed by the artist, resulting in ceramics that possess both technical perfection and a uniquely personal character. The finely balanced proportions, immaculate finish, and nuanced glaze effects exemplify why Friberg’s works continue to be considered among the finest achievements of Scandinavian ceramic art.

The underside bears the incised Gustavsberg studio mark together with Berndt Friberg’s signature, confirming its authenticity and studio production. The vase is in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use consistent with careful ownership. The glaze remains vibrant and well preserved throughout.
