Berndt Friberg table lamp
This rare ceramic table lamp was designed by Berndt Friberg in 1956 and produced by Gustavsberg in Sweden. The lamp features a tall, gently tapering base with a smooth, continuous contour that flares subtly at the foot. The surface is covered with a fine hare’s fur glaze in a deep smoky blue hue, transitioning towards a slightly darker tone at the base. The matte glaze exhibits the characteristic texture and tonal variation of Friberg’s finest works. The lamp is topped with a conical, off-white lampshade that complements the ceramic body with a clean and understated contrast.
The lamp is in excellent condition, preserving the integrity of its ceramic glaze without cracks or chips. The ceramic surface shows minimal signs of age, retaining its original luster and depth of color. The lamp has been newly rewired to meet contemporary safety standards while maintaining its original appearance. The base bears Friberg’s incised signature along with Gustavsberg’s hallmark, confirming its authenticity and period.
Berndt Friberg (1899–1981) was one of Sweden’s most celebrated ceramicists and a leading figure of the Gustavsberg studio. Known for his technical mastery and meticulous approach to glazing, Friberg developed a range of subtle glaze variations, including the celebrated hare’s fur and celadon finishes. His forms are renowned for their refined proportions and understated elegance, often drawing inspiration from East Asian ceramics while embodying the purity of Scandinavian design.
Gustavsberg, established in 1825, played a pivotal role in the development of modern Swedish ceramics. Under the artistic leadership of designers like Wilhelm Kåge, Stig Lindberg, and Berndt Friberg, Gustavsberg produced both mass-market tableware and exceptional studio ceramics. Friberg’s contributions during the mid-20th century solidified Gustavsberg’s reputation for producing some of the finest Scandinavian art ceramics.
The dimensions of the lamp are 35 cm in diameter and 53.5 cm in height, equivalent to approximately 13.8 inches in diameter and 21.1 inches in height.
