Bertil Fridhagen desk
This freestanding desk, model “Facett” was designed by Swedish designer Bertil Fridhagen and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1960s. It is constructed from walnut, a material valued for its warm tone and refined grain pattern, which enhances the desk’s elegant appearance.
The desk features a rectangular tabletop with slightly raised edges that form a subtle gallery, preventing objects from sliding off. The structure is supported by four tapered legs that contribute to its light and balanced silhouette. The front incorporates two drawer units, each with two drawers, fitted with sculpted circular handles that reflect the craftsmanship of Scandinavian modern design. The drawer interiors are crafted from a lighter wood, showcasing precise joinery, and one drawer is lockable.
Bertil Fridhagen was known for his minimalist yet functional approach to furniture design, often characterized by clean lines and delicate detailing. His work for Bodafors, a leading Swedish furniture manufacturer, reflects the high-quality craftsmanship and material selection that defined Swedish modernism during the mid-20th century. This piece embodies the principles of mid-century Scandinavian modern design, with its emphasis on simplicity, material honesty, and refined proportions. The desk’s freestanding construction allows it to be placed centrally in a room, with a fully finished back panel contributing to its aesthetic versatility.
The dimensions of the desk are 150 cm in width, 85 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height, with a working height of 75 cm (59.1 x 33.5 x 31.1 inches, working height 29.5 inches). It remains in excellent vintage condition, with minor signs of wear consistent with age and careful use.
