Bertil Fridhagen desk

This rare drop-leaf desk was designed by Bertil Fridhagen and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece is constructed in mahogany with structural elements in beech and details in brass. Its design represents a balance between functionality and refinement, characteristic of Scandinavian modernism during this period.

The desk features a rectangular top with two drop leaves, allowing the width to be extended from 139.5 cm (54.9 in) to 209.5 cm (82.5 in). The top has an understated yet refined appearance, complemented by black-lacquered edges that frame the surface and accentuate its clean geometry. Beneath the top, three drawers provide practical storage, each fitted with a lock. The base consists of tapered legs that terminate in brass sabots, adding both stability and a subtle decorative element. The use of contrasting materials -warm-toned mahogany, lighter beech, and brass – illustrates a thoughtful interplay of color and texture.

Bertil Fridhagen was one of the leading Swedish designers associated with Bodafors, a furniture company known for high-quality production and progressive design in the mid-20th century.
