Bertil Fridhagen dining chairs
This is a very rare and complete set comprising two armchairs and six side chairs, model Diamant, designed by Bertil Fridhagen and produced by Bodafors in Sweden in 1963. The set exemplifies refined Swedish modernist craftsmanship and design from the mid-20th century. Each chair is constructed in solid walnut with an elegantly tapered frame and features original upholstery in black leather, finished with brass rivet trim along the backrest perimeter.
The chairs display an architectural clarity, with the rear legs extending upward to meet the gently inclined backrest, which is padded and covered in slightly textured black leather. The armrests on the two captain chairs are finely shaped, angular, and integrated with the frame in a continuous gesture. The leather remains in original condition, exhibiting a moderate sheen and natural wear with visible creasing, minor abrasions, and age-consistent patina that contributes to the authenticity of the set. The riveted trim adds a subtle decorative accent that complements the dark finish of the wood.
Bertil Fridhagen (1905–1993) was a Swedish designer known for his work that combined functional modernist principles with artisanal woodworking. His collaboration with the furniture manufacturer Bodafors, particularly during the 1950s and 1960s, produced a number of now-sought-after designs, notably dining and seating furniture that balanced elegance with utility. Bodafors was a leading Swedish furniture producer with a strong tradition in high-quality wood construction, and their manufacturing precision is evident in the fine joinery and finishes of these pieces.
The condition is good vintage, with light signs of usage, including minor nicks to the walnut and localized wear on the leather surfaces. All joints remain solid and stable. The walnut has aged to a rich warm brown, with visible grain variation adding depth to the overall appearance.
Dimensions for each chair are standard dining proportions, with comfortable seat height and well-balanced back support. These pieces are ideal for use in formal or design-forward interiors, and they are accompanied by a matching dining table, which was produced in the same material and design idiom.
