Birger Larsson floor vase

This large stoneware floor vase was designed by Birger Larsson and produced by Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. It exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century ceramic design, characterized by a restrained form, earthy palette, and emphasis on hand-thrown craftsmanship. The vase has a cylindrical shape with a gentle taper toward the shoulder and a short, upright neck with an unglazed lip. The proportions are tall and narrow, providing a strong vertical presence that makes it well-suited for use as a floor-standing vessel.

The surface is finished in a combination of iron-rich brown and matte black glazes, with a horizontal striped pattern formed by alternating bands. These bands display subtle irregularities, which are characteristic of the hand-applied glazing process. The dark zones exhibit finely striated vertical textures, a result of the throwing technique. The glaze varies in reflectivity, with the shoulder and neck areas having a slightly more satin sheen, while the lower section has a softened matte finish and darker tone, adding visual depth and contrast.

Birger Larsson was active in Swedish ceramics during the mid-20th century and contributed to Wallåkra’s legacy of durable, utilitarian stoneware. Wallåkra Stenkärlsfabrik, founded in 1864, was known for using local clay and salt-glaze firing techniques. While initially focused on functional pottery, the company began to explore more expressive forms during the 1950s and 1960s, responding to the modernist movements of the time. Larsson’s work at Wallåkra often combined practical forms with subtle, rhythmic surface decoration, as demonstrated by this vase.

The vase is signed on the underside with the impressed “Wallåkra” mark and incised initials associated with Birger Larsson’s authorship. The piece is in excellent condition, with no cracks or restorations, and only minimal signs of age. The glaze remains consistent and intact across the surface.
