Börje Johanson bar stools
Bar stools model Venus designed by Börje Johanson and produced by AB Bröderna Johanson Fåtöljindustri in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The stools feature a sculptural seat form upholstered in black imitation leather, supported by a white lacquered metal tulip base with a circular chromed steel footrest. The combination of materials gives the piece a striking visual balance between industrial precision and organic curvature.
The seat has a deep, enveloping shell shape that provides both comfort and a distinct modernist silhouette. The smooth black upholstery contrasts elegantly with the white base, emphasizing the stool’s minimal yet dynamic composition. The footrest ring adds functional support and complements the overall geometry with its polished chrome finish.
Börje Johanson was active in the postwar Swedish design movement, known for his modern furniture pieces that combined functionalism with sculptural form. His collaboration with Bröderna Johanson Fåtöljindustri, later known as Johanson Design, produced several iconic seating designs widely used in public interiors and contemporary Scandinavian environments. The company, founded in 1953, remains recognized for its craftsmanship and progressive design ethos.
The set remains in good vintage condition with small signs of usage consistent with age, such as minor wear to the lacquered surfaces. The upholstery is well preserved and retains its original appearance.
