Börje Johanson bar stools
This pair of bar stools was designed by Börje Johanson and produced by Johanson Design in Markaryd, Sweden during the 1960s. The stools feature a brass-plated steel frame with trumpet-shaped bases and circular footrests, reflecting the fusion of space-age and functionalist influences prevalent in Scandinavian and international design of that era. The wide base provides stability and visual balance to the slender shaft and footrest.
The seat and backrest are upholstered in dark red imitation leather (skai), which offers a smooth, slightly glossy surface contrasting with the metallic sheen of the brass frame. The curved backrest is supported by a brass-plated U-shaped element that extends beneath the seat, lending a sculptural and dynamic profile to the stools. The design balances ergonomic functionality with an elegant and distinctive silhouette.
Börje Johanson was a Swedish designer recognized for his modern seating solutions, especially for contract and public environments. Founded in 1953, Johanson Design became one of Sweden’s leading producers of contemporary chairs and stools, known for their quality materials, clean lines, and adaptability to modernist interiors and commercial spaces.
These stools exemplify the Scandinavian mid-century approach by combining industrial materials with ergonomic design and sculptural form. They are in good vintage condition, showing expected signs of age and use, including wear to the brass plating and surface marks on the upholstery.
Each stool measures 37 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 106 cm in height, approximately 14.6 inches wide, 17.7 inches deep, and 41.7 inches tall. The seat height is 82 cm, or about 32.3 inches.
