Pewter box

This rare pewter box, produced in 1937 by the distinguished Swedish firm GAB (Guldsmedsaktiebolaget), exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and stylistic synthesis that characterized Scandinavian decorative arts in the interwar period. Formed with a restrained rectangular geometry, the box features gently tapering sides and a subtly domed, hinged lid that echoes the streamlined contours associated with the late Art Deco movement.

The lid is centered by a sculptural pewter handle with a geometric profile, its carefully delineated lines lending the piece a distinctly architectural quality. A fine brass trim encircles the upper surface, offering a contrast in both tone and texture to the matte, silvery finish of the pewter. This interplay of materials continues at the base, where a decorative brass border, cast with a repeating acanthus leaf motif, evokes classical ornamentation and adds a layer of historicist reference to an otherwise modern form.

Internally, the box is lined with finely finished wood, divided into compartments that reflect a concern for both elegance and utility. The wood surfaces are smooth and well-preserved, suggesting thoughtful use and maintenance. The combination of metals and wood illustrates a deliberate approach to material contrast, typical of high-quality Scandinavian metalwork of the time.

The exterior pewter has developed a mellow patina, with subtle tonal variation across the surface that reflects natural oxidation and gentle wear over the course of nearly a century. These signs of age enhance the visual depth of the material without compromising the box’s structural integrity. Minor surface abrasions are present, consistent with its age and use, but do not detract from its overall presentation.

The underside bears the stamped hallmark of GAB, verifying its origin from one of Sweden’s premier producers of precious and decorative metalwork. GAB, active from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century, was known for its high standards in both ecclesiastical and domestic silver and pewter design, often employing leading designers or working in line with contemporary international styles.

Measuring 15.5 × 11 × 9.5 cm (6.1 × 4.3 × 3.7 inches), this box offers a compact yet dignified presence. Its synthesis of neoclassical detailing, Art Deco form, and utilitarian function situates it as an important example of late interwar Swedish design, where historical motifs were reinterpreted through the lens of modern craftsmanship.
