Information

This very rare lounge chair was designed by Bruno Mathsson in 1944 and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden. The chair was manufactured by his father’s workshop and belongs to Mathsson’s early and most experimental period, when he was developing his pioneering ideas around ergonomics, elasticity, and the relationship between the human body and furniture. Designs from this phase are scarce and form an important part of Swedish modern furniture history.

The construction is executed in bent beech, shaped into flowing, continuous curves that define both the structural frame and the armrests. The beech has a warm honey-toned finish that emphasizes the grain and the precision of the bending process. The seat and back are formed by woven webbing, creating a flexible surface that adapts to the body and distributes weight evenly. This construction was central to Mathsson’s research into seated comfort and reflects his background in cabinetmaking combined with a highly analytical approach to form and function.

The chair is fitted with loose cushions upholstered in fabric, adding an additional layer of comfort while maintaining the original design intent. The upholstery includes a patterned textile on the seat and a plain fabric cushion for the back, both in subdued tones that complement the light beech frame. The distinctive rear wheels are integrated into the structure, allowing the chair to be moved easily despite its generous size, while also contributing to its sculptural and functional character.

Bruno Mathsson is regarded as one of the most influential figures in Swedish modern design, particularly known for his innovative use of laminated wood and webbing. His work from the 1940s laid the foundation for many of his later, more widely produced designs. Firma Karl Mathsson played a crucial role in realizing these early experiments, combining traditional craftsmanship with advanced technical solutions.

The chair is in good vintage condition, showing visible signs of use and age-related patina. These include wear to the wood surfaces and webbing consistent with long-term use, which contribute to the authenticity and historical presence of the piece. The structure remains stable and functional.

The lounge chair measures approximately 170 cm in length, 63 cm in width, and 90 cm in height, corresponding to about 66.9 x 24.8 x 35.4 inches. The seat height is approximately 36 cm, or 14.2 inches.
