Bruno Mathsson lounge chair
A Pernilla 3 lounge chair designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Firma Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1968. This model represents one of Mathsson’s most iconic and ergonomically advanced designs, developed from his continuous exploration of the seated body and its natural posture.
The chair is constructed with a laminated and bent beech frame, forming a fluid, organic structure that supports the body in a reclined position. The sweeping curves extend from the backrest through the seat and into the integrated leg support, creating a continuous line that emphasizes both comfort and sculptural clarity. The armrests are shaped from bentwood elements, elegantly rising from the frame and following the contour of the body, while maintaining a light and open visual expression.
The upholstery consists of a stretched wool fabric in a muted green tone, tightly fitted over the frame to enhance the chair’s characteristic suspended appearance. A detachable headrest cushion in a contrasting light textile is secured with leather straps, providing both visual contrast and additional comfort. The combination of materials—warm beech, textured wool, and natural leather—creates a balanced and tactile composition.
The construction reflects Mathsson’s technical innovation, where the tensioned fabric adapts to the sitter, distributing weight evenly and reducing pressure points. The visible fastenings and layered wood elements underline the functional honesty of the design, while the craftsmanship remains precise and refined.
The chair measures approximately 64 cm in width, 170 cm in length, and 90 cm in height, with a seat height of 35 cm, corresponding to 25.2 x 66.9 x 35.4 inches and a seat height of 13.8 inches. It remains in good vintage condition with small signs of usage, including light wear to the fabric and frame consistent with age, while retaining its structural integrity and overall presentation.
