Cabinet
Very rare cabinet produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), Stockholm, Sweden during the 1940s. Executed in the manner of Josef Frank, the cabinet reflects the decorative and expressive approach that became synonymous with Swedish Modern design, combining a restrained architectural form with a richly detailed ornamental surface.
The cabinet is constructed with a stained beech frame and top, while the interior is made from solid pine fitted with adjustable shelves and two drawers. Resting on four turned spherical feet, the cabinet has a simple rectilinear silhouette that is contrasted by its remarkable exterior. Every visible surface is covered with printed paper depicting an intricate aerial map of Paris, carefully aligned to create a continuous composition across the doors, sides and frame. Well-known landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, the Seine, the Louvre and the city’s historic boulevards can be identified within the detailed print, giving the cabinet an almost panoramic quality.
This type of decorative treatment reflects the playful yet sophisticated philosophy associated with Josef Frank, whose work challenged the functional austerity of modernism by introducing richly patterned surfaces inspired by nature, travel and urban life. While not documented as a design by Frank himself, the cabinet clearly shares many of the aesthetic qualities that made his interiors and furniture so influential during the mid-twentieth century. The juxtaposition of a clean, functional cabinet form with an elaborate cartographic motif creates a highly distinctive and exceptionally rare piece.
Founded in 1902, Nordiska Kompaniet established itself as Sweden’s leading luxury department store and furniture producer through NK Verkstäder. The company collaborated with many of the country’s foremost designers and cabinetmakers, producing furniture of outstanding craftsmanship and material quality. This cabinet retains its original Nordiska Kompaniet Stockholm label together with the original production plaque, confirming its manufacture by NK.
The cabinet remains in good vintage condition with small signs of age and use consistent with more than eighty years of careful ownership. The stained beech frame has acquired a warm, even patina, while the printed paper covering shows light wear that enhances its character without compromising the overall appearance. The pine interior is clean and well preserved, retaining its original finish and fittings.
