Carl Auböck watering can
This rare watering can was designed by Carl Auböck and produced by Illums Bolighus in Denmark during the 1950s. It presents a sculptural and minimalist form, crafted from copper and brass. The body consists of a conical copper vessel, complemented by a gracefully curved brass handle that extends into a long, slender spout engineered for precise water flow. Over time, the brass components have developed a natural patina that harmonizes with the oxidized surface of the copper body, enhancing the piece’s vintage character.
Carl Auböck, an Austrian designer and craftsman, was renowned for his modernist interpretation of everyday objects. His work frequently balanced functionality with sculptural form, emphasizing artisanal craftsmanship and the use of high-quality materials. This collaboration with Illums Bolighus, a respected Danish retailer of modern design, situates the watering can within the Scandinavian mid-century aesthetic while preserving Auböck’s distinctive handcrafted style.
The watering can reflects mid-century modern design principles, emphasizing practicality alongside visual balance. Its elongated spout allows for controlled watering, particularly suitable for delicate indoor plants. The conical shape provides stability, and the brass handle offers an ergonomic grip. The interplay between copper and brass, accentuated by their aged patina, adds depth and authenticity to the piece.
The watering can is in vintage condition, exhibiting typical signs of age such as patina development and oxidation on both the copper and brass surfaces. Its dimensions measure 45 cm in width, 11 cm in depth, and 38 cm in height (17.7 x 4.3 x 15 inches).
