Carl Fagerlund ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1950s. It embodies mid-century Scandinavian design principles, balancing organic form, refined craftsmanship, and careful material selection.
The fixture features five gracefully curving brass arms radiating from a central hub, each ending in a flared brass socket holder. Mounted against each arm are wide, petal-like shades made from thick opaline white glass. These glass diffusers curve gently outward and upward, forming a layered floral composition that delivers both direct and diffused light. The suspension rod and canopy are also brass, with a tapered cup-shaped upper fitting that harmonizes with the socket profiles.
The brass components display a natural patina with surface marks and oxidation typical of untreated brass from the period, while the glass shades remain in excellent condition, free of cracks or chips. The lamp retains all original parts and shows consistent aging throughout.
Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011), a Swedish designer and lighting expert, worked with Orrefors from the 1940s through the 1970s. His designs are known for sculptural clarity and the use of premium materials, especially glass, often manipulated to create tactile or optical effects. Fagerlund’s lighting works frequently explore the interplay of light, texture, and transparency.
Orrefors, founded in 1898, is internationally renowned for artistic and technical innovation in glassmaking. In the mid-20th century, the company extended its expertise into lighting design, blending traditional glass techniques with modernist aesthetics.
The lamp measures 56 cm in diameter and 49 cm in height, approximately 22 inches wide and 19.3 inches tall.
