Carl Fagerlund ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp, designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden, stands as an exemplary fusion of sculptural form and functional refinement, characteristic of Scandinavian lighting design in the mid-20th century. Fagerlund, known for his elegant use of glass in lighting, brought an elevated decorative sensibility to modern interiors, and this piece captures his mastery with clarity and restraint.
The lamp’s structure is composed of six gracefully radiating brass arms that emerge symmetrically from a central column. Each arm terminates in a conical brass shade, beneath which sits an opaline glass diffuser. These diffusers are carefully proportioned to emit a soft, ambient light that is both functional and atmospheric. Between each arm are large, leaf-shaped pressed glass panels, another hallmark of Fagerlund’s design language, which serve both as light reflectors and sculptural elements. The glass panels are textural and tactile, catching and diffusing light to produce a shimmering play of illumination and shadow.
The central support column, crafted in solid brass, extends to a delicately perforated ceiling mount that secures the fixture while providing an ornamental accent. The perforations add subtle detail, echoing the interplay of opacity and translucency found in the diffuser-glass combination. The brass elements, including the arms, shades, and mount, exhibit a warm golden tone and retain a beautifully aged patina, enriching the overall composition with a sense of historical depth.
Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011) served as one of Orrefors’ principal designers from the 1940s to the 1970s. His lighting designs for Orrefors often combined high-quality Swedish crystal with finely worked metal, achieving a balance of modernity and luxury. Orrefors, founded in 1898, was globally recognized for its collaborations with artists and designers who, like Fagerlund, pushed the boundaries of glasswork through both technique and form.
This particular ceiling lamp is in excellent vintage condition. The glass panels are free from cracks or chips and maintain their optical clarity and textured brilliance. The brass surfaces have been preserved with care, showing only minor, age-appropriate wear and a uniform patina that enhances the richness of the design.
As both a functional lighting fixture and an artful ceiling centerpiece, this lamp exemplifies the elegance and material sophistication that define Carl Fagerlund’s work. It offers not only atmospheric lighting but also a rare and enduring expression of Swedish design at its most refined.
