Carl Fagerlund ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp was designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1960s. It is a striking example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining decorative elegance with refined material craftsmanship. The piece is constructed from brass and pressed crystal glass, showcasing Fagerlund’s characteristic attention to both form and light diffusion.
The fixture features a central stem in vertically fluted clear glass with an internal brass rod, suspended from a conical brass ceiling canopy. The body of the lamp consists of a bowl formed by twelve deeply curved glass petals arranged in a radial pattern. Each glass segment is textured with intricate relief patterns incorporating foliage motifs and fine cross-hatching, which enhances the reflection and refraction of light. These panels are framed at the bottom by a pressed glass diffuser and a central brass finial.
The design mimics the structure of a blooming flower, with each petal-shaped element contributing to the sculptural symmetry of the composition. When illuminated, the textured glass refracts the light and casts delicate patterns, producing a luminous, atmospheric effect. The materials are of high quality and remain in good vintage condition, with some light signs of age and patina visible on the brass and minor wear to the glass components, consistent with the lamp’s age.
Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011) was a Swedish lighting and glass designer associated with the Orrefors glassworks, one of Sweden’s most esteemed producers of crystal. His work is defined by its rich textures, geometric clarity, and sophisticated interplay of glass and light. At Orrefors, Fagerlund developed a series of luxurious lighting fixtures that helped bridge the divide between functional lighting and decorative art.
This lamp represents a mid-century Scandinavian approach to opulence—ornate in detail but restrained in color and form. It is well suited for interiors that emphasize crafted materiality and organic structure.
The dimensions of the lamp are approximately 46.5 cm in diameter and 64 cm in height, corresponding to 18.3 inches in diameter and 25.2 inches in height.
