Carl Fagerlund mirror
This very rare and large mirror was designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1940s. The frame is composed of hand-cast glass segments, each exhibiting a rich, textured surface with rhythmic relief patterns that capture and refract light. The precision of the glasswork, typical of Orrefors’ mid-century craftsmanship, creates a luminous border around the central mirror, balancing sculptural depth with visual transparency.
The rectangular form is softened by rounded corners and the subtle irregularities of the cast glass, emphasizing the artisanal quality of its production. Behind the apparent simplicity lies a complex process of glass casting and polishing that reflects Orrefors’ dedication to technical excellence. The mirror’s restrained palette and tactile surface make it an outstanding example of Scandinavian mid-century decorative design, combining modern geometry with the organic qualities of hand-crafted glass.
Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011) was one of Sweden’s foremost lighting and glass designers, celebrated for his collaborations with Orrefors Glasbruk. His work often explored the interaction between glass, metal, and light, resulting in elegant, sculptural objects that blurred the line between function and ornament. This mirror, though minimal in structure, reveals the same sensitivity to material and reflection seen in his lighting designs.
The piece remains in good vintage condition with only minor signs of age and wear, preserving the clarity and brilliance of the glass.
