Carl-Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs, model “Rialto” designed by Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs and produced by Puunveisto in Finland in 1957, exemplifies Scandinavian modernism’s elegant balance of form, function, and craftsmanship.

The chairs feature a sculptural frame of solid ash wood, finished in a warm honey tone that highlights the wood’s natural grain and subtle faceting. The design is characterized by its slightly reclined, angled posture with rear legs flowing seamlessly into the backrest, creating a fluid, architectural profile. The backrest includes a curved birch plywood shell exposed at the rear, blending functional support with refined visual expression.

Distinctive leather-wrapped armrests provide tactile contrast and vintage character, complementing the newly reupholstered seat and back cushions in high-quality grey wool. The cushions are tailored with geometric precision, harmonizing with the chair’s clean lines and natural material palette.

Carl Gustaf Hiort af Ornäs was renowned for his formal innovation and respect for natural materials, with the Puunveisto cooperative producing some of his most refined furniture.
