Carl-Harry Stålhane bowl
This rare ceramic bowl or tray was designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. It features a dynamic organic form with a curving, asymmetrical silhouette. The surface is decorated with an abstract fish motif, composed of geometric elements in black, white, and yellow, set against a deep cobalt blue glaze. The exterior has a subdued matte finish, contrasting with the glossy and vibrant interior.
Carl-Harry Stålhane was one of Sweden’s most celebrated ceramicists, known for his innovative use of form and glazing techniques. His tenure at Rörstrand from the 1940s to the 1970s saw the creation of designs that balanced artistic expression with functionality. His work frequently explored organic shapes, textured surfaces, and rich color palettes, embodying the Scandinavian modernist emphasis on material quality and craftsmanship.
Rörstrand, founded in 1726, is one of Sweden’s foremost porcelain and ceramic manufacturers. In the mid-20th century, the company was a leader in modern ceramic design, collaborating with artists like Stålhane to produce pieces that were both utilitarian and artistic, earning international acclaim.
