Carl-Harry Stålhane vase
This rare ceramic vase, designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1960s, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian modern ceramics. The vase embodies Stålhane’s characteristic emphasis on elegant proportions, minimalist form, and masterful glazing techniques.
The surface is covered in a rich blue glaze that transitions subtly from a deep cobalt at the base to a lighter tone near the rim. The glaze exhibits a finely crackled texture, which enhances the visual depth and tactile quality of the piece. The form is slender and elongated, featuring a gently tapered body that rises into a narrow, slightly flared neck. The small recessed foot adds a sense of lightness and balance to the overall composition.
Carl-Harry Stålhane was a leading figure in Swedish ceramics, known for his expertise in stoneware and sophisticated glazing. He joined Rörstrand in the 1930s and later became the company’s artistic director, significantly shaping its modernist direction. His work reflects a blend of Scandinavian simplicity and East Asian ceramic traditions, producing timeless and highly collectible pieces.
Rörstrand, founded in 1726, remains one of Sweden’s most prestigious porcelain manufacturers and played a pivotal role in the development of Scandinavian modern ceramics through collaborations with prominent designers like Stålhane.
Measuring 12 cm in diameter and 35 cm in height (4.7 x 13.8 inches), this vase is in excellent condition, free from visible imperfections or restorations, preserving the original design and glaze’s integrity.
