Carl-Harry Stålhane vase

This rare ceramic vase, designed by Carl-Harry Stålhane and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden, is a fine example of mid-20th-century Scandinavian ceramic artistry. Known for his elegant yet restrained forms, Stålhane brought a sculptural sensibility to functional objects, often exploring organic shapes and experimental glazing techniques. This piece exemplifies that balance of form, surface, and texture.

The vase features an asymmetrical, flowing rim that gives the vessel an expressive, almost floral quality. The body gently tapers from the wide, irregular opening down to a narrower, rounded base, creating a dynamic silhouette that feels both deliberate and naturally evolved. This organic curvature is characteristic of Stålhane’s later studio work, where he increasingly blurred the lines between decorative art and utilitarian vessel.

The glaze is richly complex, with an earthy palette dominated by olive green, accented with beige and subtle brown undertones. The mottled surface presents a textured, almost cratered or volcanic finish—an effect Stålhane often achieved through high-temperature reduction firing and layered glaze compositions. The resulting surface evokes a sense of geological depth, inviting close inspection and tactile engagement.

The vase is in excellent vintage condition. There are no visible chips, cracks, or restorations, and the surface glaze is intact, with its subtle variations preserved. The base bears the incised signature of Carl-Harry Stålhane along with the “R” mark for Rörstrand, confirming its authenticity and origin. These markings are typical of his studio-produced works from the mid-century period.

Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920–1990) was a leading figure at Rörstrand, succeeding Gunnar Nylund as artistic director. His work ranged from industrially produced tableware to unique studio ceramics, often characterized by refined proportions, muted tones, and innovative glaze treatments. This vase sits firmly within the latter category, representing his more expressive and artistic side.
